{ home-based care

This is a service provided by a volunteer trained in caregiving, much like a nurse AIDE who goes into the community (amongst their neighbors) and cares for the sick and vulnerable. Our home-based caregivers have been working in the field for about 5-6 years. They once received a stipend from the government but for the past two years have received nothing. They are the eyes and hands and feet to our community. They care for the sick in their homes and if more medical help or support or pastoral care is needed, they come to us and we assist where we can. They let us know of the sick who are left alone, and children who are orphaned. Their job is important and we are trying to raise a stipend for them of R700 a month ($l00 US). This isn't much but would be a huge blessing to those doing this work. We are attempting to raise salaries/stipends for those working in the hospice. Rl400 ($200 US) a month would cover a salary for one of our workers.

Give to the Home-Based Care Fund:

{ staff

We have three caregiver shifts a day for the hospice and will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and Ukukhanya Life Care Centre pays stipends to these workers. The average stipend equals about $l00-$l50 US. Just think: that supports someone for almost one month. In these challenging times of scarce job openings, we are creating jobs for the community of Ntuzuma and we need full time staff to keep the facility open 24/7. In addition to the four caregivers we recently hired, we also took on two cooks and two security guards. Just $l00 a month creates a job for someone. See our l00 for l00 program.

{ sponsor a child for camp

In 2009 we did an Orphans and Vulnerable Childrens (OVC) Camp called "The Extravagant Love of the Father." It was amazing: the families and people in the community were so grateful that the kids were so blessed to attend this 4-night/5-day camp at a lovely Christian camp site in the country. They received good meals a day (a treat for many of them who nortmally have to get by on just one meal), a new blanket, clothes, shoes and a towel. They received teaching, art lessons and recreation. They had a talent show and learned life skills. It was an amazing time and those that helped serve the children felt as blessed as the children themselves. R600 ($90 US) sponsors a child for this event and we hope to hold one annually (they are already asking us to do it again). Some people have looked at sponsoring a child in lieu of a gift for the person who has everything at Christmas! They wrap a picture and a note saying what was donated, which becomes a prayer card for that child.

Support a child for camp:

{ ARV's for children

ARV's are the medications for people with AIDS. For $20 US a month it enables us to take a child to a semi private Christian hospital where they receive the AIDS medication (ARV's) and are under a doctor's care. ARV's are free in this country but blood work and monitoring are not always done and the kids have to travel into the city to access them. For R70 (or $l0 US) they get the ARV's along with a complete monthly workup. The other R70 ($l0 US) provides transportation for the child, a family member and a caregiver from our organization to escort them to the hospital.

{ grace fund

Special donations can go to this fund that helps us send patients with needs for short term hospitalization, and we can send them to the semi-private Christian Hospital. (We can't begin to describe the medical hospital that our community is having to attend. It is very over-burdened and a patient waits almost all day just to be seen, even when extremely sick.

Thank you for prayerfully considering giving to our work here in South Africa. One thing we have learned is we cannot "outgive" our Lord.
